Description

The Model 942A Magnet Charger is a high voltage magnet charger capable of saturating large volumes of Alnico, Barium Ferrite and Rare Earth materials. Magnetization of magnetic sensors, multipole rotors, permanent magnet motors, loud speakers, load isolators, magnetrons, accelerometers, TWT (traveling wave tubes) and large holding magnet applications are all easily achieved with the Model 942A Magnet Charger. Both wire wound or solid copper and iron magnetizing fixtures can be utilized with the Model 942A. Wire wound fixtures are used in conjunction with this unit for both bipolar and multipole magnetizing. The Models 7702 and 7778 pulse transformers enable the processing of  "C" shaped load isolators, single and double "U" shaped magnetrons and a wide range of motor configurations.

The Model 942A is available in four basic configurations, depending upon the number of 100 uF capacitors mounted in the console. Additional capacitors (up to a total of eight) can be ordered and added to the capacitor bank at a later date:

Model

Capacity

Model  Capacity

942A-2

2 (200 uF total)

942A-6  6 (600 uF total)

942A-4

4 (400 uF total)

942A-8 8 (800 uF total)

All electronic circuitry and storage capacitors are enclosed in the instrument cabinet. A comprehensive system of interlocks disable the line input and storage circuits when charging fixtures/transformers are unplugged or any of the cabinet access covers are removed.

Specifications
Energy Level & Capacitor Recharge Times:

Model Energy Level Watt-Seconds *Charge Time (to 2,700 VDC) Seconds
942A-2 900 5
942A-4 1,800 10
942A-6

   2,700

15
942A-8 3,600 20

* The cycle times listed here are capacitor recharge times to 2,700 VDC. Lower voltages will produce faster recharge times, however, actual cycle times may vary depending on fixture cooling requirements and input line voltage.

Typical Peak Magnetizing Forces Using Accessory Charging Transformers:
7702 Transformer - Peak H = 16,000 Oersteds/7778 Transformer - Peak H = 13,000 Oersteds
Note: Although the data above indicates a higher Peak H for the 7702, the 7702 "I" bar charging bar is much shorter than the 7778 "I" bar. The 7702 transformer should not be used with a capacitor bank exceeding 200 uF. The 7778 Transformer may be used with the full 800 uF capacitor bank producing greater total energy over the 7702.

Peak Magnetizing Fields Using Wire Wound Fixtures:
Peak magnetizing forces up to 60,000 Oersteds are attainable with wire wound fixtures.

Magnetizing Pulse Characteristics:
This unit produces a sinusoidal half cycle pulse.  The rise time to the peak and overall pulse length will depend on the fixture impedance and the capacitance of the magnetizer.
Typical transformer pulse characteristics:
7702 = 0.5 ms rise time to peak 4 ms pulse length
7778 = 2.0 ms rise time to peak 14 ms pulse length

Input Power Requirements: (50/60 Hz)
120 Volts 10 Amps Avg.
240 Volts (With step-down transformer)
5 Amps Avg.

Dimensions:
Height: 38 in (96.5 cm)
Width: 30 in (76.0 cm)
Depth: 33 in (83.8 cm)

Weight: (Net) Model 942A-2 (Max.) 235 lb (106 kg),  Model 942A-8 (Max.) 370 lb (168 kg)
